What Bhutan Can Instruct Us About Happiness

It continues to be over several years since I retired from my full-time practice and spent 90 days doing volunteer work and driving Southeast Asia. One from the best regions of my trip was chilling in the remote Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan. It was their monarch who defined the very idea of Gross National Happiness (GNH) to measure standard of living. And Bhutan will be the only country from the world that puts happiness and general well-being in the center of its government policy.
The Bhutanese distinguish four pillars of GNH: sustainable development, cultural integrity, ecosystem conservation and good governance. Their Buddhist ideals demonstrate how material and spiritual development can complement and reinforce the other person. This tiny nation of lower than 700,000 inhabitants is one of the least populated inside world and it's also situated between a pair of the most densely populated countries, India and China. Totally isolated, how is it possible that Bhutan is happier than other countries?

When our life is tough, be optimistic and continue to find the silver lining in a situation. The country carries a matriarchal system, few cars, no branding inside shops, one particular television station as well as a passion for archery. Healthcare and education have the freedom for life.
